How to Get Involved

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer with HFH Halton, your experience is guaranteed to last a life time! Volunteering with us is a great way to give back to the community while meeting new people, learning new skills and most importantly having fun!

In order to fulfill our mission we depend on volunteers to donate their time and skills. This support helps to build a better tomorrow for deserving families while breaking the cycle of poverty for generations to come.

The following are just some of the areas in which you can help:

  • Working in our office
  • Working in our ReStore
  • Staffing an information booth at a community fair or festival
  • Helping at fundraising events
  • Working on a committee
  • Providing food and beverage to build volunteers
  • Working on our Build Sites

Please note all volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to volunteer.

For more information on how to become a volunteer please contact Deanna Smuk, Volunteer Coordinator, at 905-637-4446 ext. 223 or send an email to volunteer@habitathalton.ca.

We look forward to you joining our dynamic volunteer team!

The Application Process

Step #1 – View our Immediate Needs/Positions Available

Interested individuals are asked to visit our immediate needs/positions available page to view current volunteer opportunities.  If any of these positions are of interest please contact the Volunteer Coordinator to set up a time to meet.

At this time the volunteer application form will be emailed to you to complete.  You will be required to bring the completed form to the interview.

Step #2 – The Volunteer Interview

All individuals (excluding build volunteers, also know as crew members) interested in a current volunteer position are required to participate in an interview.

The interview will highlight the position description and detail the time commitment requirements.   This process will enable us to determine if this is the most appropriate opportunity for you.  The interviewer will take into consideration the individual's skills, interest and time availability.  We believe at HFH Halton all volunteer opportunities must be mutually beneficial for all involved.

Step #3 – The Volunteer Orientation and Safety Training Session

After successfully completing the interview process and any additional screening measures (position specific) all volunteers are required to attend the Volunteer Orientation and Safety Training Session.  All sessions are held at 1800 Appleby Line Unit 10 Burlington, Ontario.

The first hour of the session will highlight our vision, mission and values; how we choose our partner families, the habitat home, volunteer guidelines, volunteer code of conduct, staff directory and facility tour.

The second hour of the session is our mandatory health and safety training; also referred to as SHE training (Safety, Health and Environment).  Safety is first and foremost!  We believe it is our priority and duty to provide a safe environment to our volunteers and the training needed to complete their work/assignments in the safest way possible.

Step #4 – Placement

After attending the volunteer orientation and safety training session placement will occur and additional training will be provided; on the job and job specific.

Please note ReStore and build volunteers must provide their own CSA approved footwear.  This is a mandatory piece of personal protective equipment that must be worn on all build sites and in the ReStore at all times. .

2009 Build Projects

HFH Halton will be completing several ReNew It projects staring in the summer/fall of 2009.  These projects will take place in all communities within the Halton Region (Burlington, Oakville, Milton, Georgetown and Acton).

ReNew It is a housing maintenance and repair initiative targeting existing low- income homeowners who do not have the disposable income required to make their homes safe, accessible and energy efficient.

If this opportunity is of interest please contact Deanna Smuk, Volunteer Coordinator, at 905-637-4446 ext. 223 or send an email to volunteer@habitathalton.ca to have your name placed on the 2009 build list.  You will be contacted in the early summer months to complete the volunteer orientation and safety training session.

Please note the ReNew It crew member positions may require an interview.  All volunteers must provide their own CSA approved footwear.
