Who are Habitat Home Owners?

Habitat is open to people from all ethnic and religious backgrounds and gives careful consideration to the reality of the need of the applicant. Families who are selected must have a steady income, and a positive work history, but are unable to qualify for a conventional mortgage. Along with financial commitment, the family must be willing to contribute 500 hours of "sweat equity" in the building of their home. The selected family must also be willing to cooperate with the Family Support Committee in learning about, and preparing for, the responsibility of home ownership.

How do Habitat Mortgages Work?

Habitat homeowners repay the cost of the home on a monthly basis through a no-interest, non-profit, mortgage. The amortization period of the mortgage is usually 25-35 years. The mortgage payments go into a Fund for Humanity and are used to build more homes for low-income families.

We Welcome Your Application

To qualify for a Habitat home, families must meet the following criteria:

  • Your present living conditions do not meet your family's needs. It may be too costly, in poor shape, unhealthy, unsafe, too small etc.

  • You have a steady income, but are unable to afford or obtain a conventional mortgage.

  • Your family's combined income level is below the Low Income Cut-Off Level for the Region of  Halton.

  • You are willing to work at least 500 hours (sweat equity) on the building of your own house, and other Habitat houses and activities.

  • You have lived in Halton at least 2 years.

  • You are able to provide references from three non-related people who know you well. The references will recommend your willingness to partner with Habitat, repay your mortgage and maintain the home. Additional references will be required from your employer, landlord and bank.

How does a family apply for a Habitat House?

The first step to applying is to attend an Information Session. These sessions explain Habitat for Humanity and what it means to become a Partner Family. At the present time, no Information Sessions are scheduled. Please contact Lynn Petruzzella at @221 to have your name added to our contact list.
